Snake Venom Poisoning
Published in Hardcover by Scholium Intl (May, 1983)
Author: Findlay E. Russell
Average review score:

Masterful treatment of an intricate, technical subject. . .
Doctor Findlay Russell is widely acknowledged as one of the world's leading authorities on snakes and the pharmacology of snake venoms. This text serves as powerful collaborating evidence of the validity of that reputation.

Snake Venom Poisoning is a well-rounded examination of the many facets of serpent life, including natural history, environmental considerations, serum toxicology, clinical indications, legal concerns and even common misconceptions and mythology. The book is definitely written with the clinician in mind, but anyone with a strong interest or moderate grounding in the subject matter will find the work easy to navigate through and profoundly interesting.

Numerous case studies are presented, alongwith some rather disturbing photographs of the physical results of envenomations. The chapters on pharmacology and the chemical composition of venom are extremely technical, but still contain sufficient general information to be of value to anyone, including the layperson.

Snake Venom Poisoning is not light reading. However, to the serious student of toxicology or to those whose vocation or avocation places them in proximity to these fascinating but potentially deadly creatures, this volume is an invaluable asset.

Makes a person think twice before messing around
I read this book because of my interest in keeping venomous snakes. I had a bad case of complacency which this book cured real quick, Although I still hope to work with and keep venomous snakes someday.Anybody considering handling "hot" herps needs to read this book. I was also impressed by the chapter on gila monsters that was included in this book. Good job Doctor.

The most comprehensive I've read
Russell has obviously drawn upon his extensive personal and technical knowlege and experience in the compilation of the most comprehensive investigation and explanation of snake venom poisoning available in the current literature set. This book does not cater to the esoteric niches so often found in critical and viable research documents nor is it filled with contrite anecdotes to humor the 4th grade intellect normally reserved for this subject matter, but rather addresses both technical and layman questions with direct and thoughtful insight and explains at both levels the immense complexity and the profoundly simple beauty that is snakes and snake venoms. This book is a must for emergency room MDs, EMTs, amateur herpetologists, and anyone interested in the pharmacology of snake venoms.

Your Rugged Constitution
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (June, 1969)
Authors: Bruce Allyn and Esther B. Findlay

I wish they'd Reprint this one.
I borrowed this book from the Library and love it so much I wanted to buy one to keep readily available. I hope somebody decides to reprint this one. I'd love a copy of my own. It breaks down the Constitution into bite sized pieces into something even I can understand.

A great basic primer on the United States Constitution
I bought this book in high school school in 1956 for a Problems in American Democracy course. I have used it in high school, college Constitutional Law courses, law school courses and the practice of law. It breaks the Constitution down almost word for word and restates it in easy, simple layman's terms. It tells you why the phrase is there, what the citizen gives up under it and what the citizen receives in benefits from it. It alows you to find and understand specific sections of the Constitution and how they apply to you. Every American should have and study this book. It is the best simple explination of this complex subject I have ever seen. The fact that it is out of print and not available, particularly to young students, is a sorry comment on our society.

My Aunt - Esther Findlay wrote this book - a classic
As a young boy - nobody could believe the a family member of mine wrote this book. I used it in government class in Junior High and High School in the 1970's. This book should still be required reading by every student in the United States

Algernon Charles Swinburne: Selected Poems
Published in Paperback by Carcanet Press Ltd (September, 1987)
Authors: L. M. Findley, L. M. Findlay, and Algernon C. Swinburne
Average review score:

The lyric champion of evil
Denounced by a Victiorian critic as a "libidinous laureate of a pack of satyrs", Swinburne's oeuvre includes forays into the realms of political, moral and spiritual revolt, themes which ran counter to the bourgeois solidity of the Victorian era. Three of his best works which illustrate this are "Anactoria", which includes the memorable line: "Exceeding pleasure in superflux of pain", an illustration of the sadistic dimension of the lesbian protagonists' relationship, "Dolores" and "Hertha" which places Swinburne in the camp of mystical transcendentalism. This collection is a must for those who want to be acquainted with one of the greatest poets in the English language, a virtuoso of metrical composition, as well as a lyric champion of vice.

Why is he over looked?
Algernon Charles Swinburne is in my opion the finest english Elizabethian Age Poet. He wrote so much of such a consistently high standard. If you like classical poetry, you owe it to yourself to find this book. Sadly most books with his poetry in it are in Library bindings, and; therefore, unaffordable for most individuals. Find his poetry, and he will create a new world for you. I can't say enough good things about this writer. His understanding of human feelings, and our innate kinship with myticism and shadows are clearly present in his early works. In addition, his meter formats are among the most intense and intricate I have ever read. If you claim to enjoy poetry. Do yourself a favor and find Swinburne. Here is a sample from his work "The Garden of Proserpine"

"I am tired of tears and laughter,/ And men that laugh and weep;/ Of what may come hereafter/ For men that sow to reap: I am weary of days and hours,/ Blown buds of barren flowers,/ Desires and dreams and powers/ And everything but sleep."

Imposing Decency: The Politics of Sexuality and Race in Puerto Rico, 1870-1920 (American Encounters/Global Interactions)
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (January, 2000)
Author: Eileen J. Suarez Findlay
Average review score:

fascinating insights
I am the grandchild of a Puerto Rican woman who lived on the island about the time this book was written. I was absolutely fascinated by the book and found it explained a lot about attitudes toward race and sexuality that prevailed in my own family that I'd always found contradictory and inexplicable.

I generally avoid books written by academicians because their writing style is usually turgid, wordy and devoid of life. Not so this book. While it does carefully document its subject, the writing is lively and engaging.

A must-read for anyone who wants insight into a fascinating aspect of Puerto Rican culture.

Accessible and well written
Well researched and engaged with the scholarly discussion, yet readable and at times very elegantly argued. The book contributes to discussions of race and sexuality and should be of interest to many more than the few academics in Latin American history and women's studies. Those people, and many others interested in those and related fields, however, MUST read it!

Models for Investors in Real World Markets
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-Interscience (November, 2002)
Authors: James R. Thompson, Edward E. Williams, and M. Chapman Findlay
Average review score:

Models for Investors in Real World Markets
When I looked at the cover of this book, I knew it was going to be contrarian. It shows volatility moving in the opposite direction to growth. Looking inside the book, I found the cover figure in Chapter 9 where it was described as volatility versus growth for 75 years of the Ibbotson Index starting in 1926. I looked at the Ibbotson table, and, indeed with the authors' eleven outlier years eliminated, the correlation is still negative (-.142). (With all 75 years included, I found the correlation to be (-.317).) At any rate, the Markowitzian notion of finding how large you can stand for volatility to be and then finding the portolio which maximizes growth is stood on its head.

The authors come up with an alternative to the Markowitz approach for portfolio selection based on something they call a simugram, which looks to be computer intensive.

Much of the book is spent on fundamental analysis, and indeed the authors do not seem favorably disposed to technical analysis. They dump on Black-Scholes and blame its use for the collapse of LTCM and Enron.

Some finance professionals will find much of this book annoying, since it attacks many standard concepts, such as the Efficient Market Hypothesis. And it seems to attack some of the basic tools in the finance tool kit, such as "risk neutral" evaluation.

One of the troubling things I found is that though the authors attack the canon of modern finance, they have only limited alternatives to recommend. They seem to recommend either doing deep fundamental analysis, using their complex simugram portfolio analysis, or putting one's money into an index fund. Most of us don't have the time to do the first or the software to do the second. To do the third really gives up on mathematical finance.

Small Business Marketing For Dummies®
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (April, 2001)
Authors: Barbara Findlay Schenck and Linda English
Average review score:

Very good with one caveat
I really liked this book overall. It brought a lot of things together for me. But, I think too much of the book is dedicated to advertising, which a really small business or startup may not have the funds to do. I think more on promotion and "guerilla" tactics would have made this a really outstanding book.

Not just for dummies!
Don't let the title mislead you. Even if you already have a background in marketing, you'll love this book-- I did.

Barbara Schenck clearly explains the jargon, terminology, value, and implementation details of each facet of marketing, using real-world (and often humorous) examples. This book is so accessible to non-marketeers that our company has made Chapter 21 (Customer Service) required reading for each member of our team.

This book is empowering, informative, inspirational. If you're rethinking your marketing (and what business isn't constantly obsessed with satisfying their customers), then make this book your road map. As instructed by the simple exercises in each chapter, I took notes while making my way through the book. Then following the instructions in the final chapters, I was able to create a Marketing Plan in just a few hours. I found the process invigorating, and our clients can already feel our enthusiasm-- and we haven't even started implementing yet!

The PEERLESS new "Bible" for small businesses!
Barbara Findlay Schenck has FINALLY brought us what we've all, as small business owners and entrepreneurs been in need of, the consummate book of wisdom and guidance for marketing concerns A-Z. I had not a single question remaining in my mind when I closed the back cover. She's thought of it all. Absolutely invaluable information, in fact, perhaps priceless.Excellent investment.
